YOUR OWN LOG CABIN: A truly tranquil retreat
Heikki and Kaija have 3 unique log cabins on their reindeer farm in a remote corner of Arctic Finland. One is the old farm house, the other a simple and traditional log cabin and the third a modern cabin with its own sauna. Each cabin is secluded in birch woods and overlooks the Lemmenjoki river (river of love).
This is the heart of the traditional Sami region of Inari and many people follow the traditional practice of reindeer herding. The surrounding forests, lakes and hills offer wonderful opportunities for walks, wildlife watching, painting, pottering in a rowing boat or in the winter, skiing and snow-shoeing.
FAMILY LOG CABINS at Kiilopaa Fell Centre - a great base for active holidays
Right at the entrance to the Urho Kekkonen National Park in Arctic Finland, these cabins come in all shapes and sizes. There are 190km of marked trails for wonderful wilderness hikes, right from the doorstep – and in the winter the Fell Centre offers free introductions to snow-shoeing and cross country skiing. For a perfect ‘White Christmas’ there is even a complimentary programme of sparkle, reindeer sleigh rides, snow games and elf-tracking. It is also a very good place to see the Northern Lights. You can self-cater or eat in the restaurant – in fact you can do as much or as little as you like, without the ‘Disney’ of a resort. That’s why we like it here – and its only 40 minutes from Ivalo airport!
