Unhurried days under the midnight sun, explore uninhabited islands and sail beneath vertical bird cliffs. Drop anchor in secluded coves and visit colourful fishing villages. To stretch your legs, simply row ashore and hike into the mountains – or relax and fish for your supper. The rugged shore-line and warming gulf-stream are home to thousands of sea birds and we always keep our eyes peeled for seals and whales.
THIS SUMMER choose between two very different styles of voyage: ‘Lazy Sailing’ or ‘Hike & Sail’.
‘Lazy Sailing’ trips are for those of you who enjoy lazy days on board, watching the scenery float by, the wonderful birdlife and taking short (un-guided) strolls ashore from our beautiful anchorages. Perhaps try your hand at a bit of fishing or sketching… and of course taking part in the sailing. We’ll visit small fishing villages, abandoned settlements, beautiful fjords and hidden coves, maybe even see dolphins and seals.
1. ‘Lazy Sailing’ 7th to 15 July: from Tromsø, via Hammerfest to Alta. These three little cities are the cultural ‘hubs’ of north Norway each with a different history and bustling life. Between them, the remote islands and islets, fjords and mountains are the opposite - wild, empty and peaceful. The only thing bustling is the birdlife! 8 nights on board. Price: NOK 10,900.- (approx £1250*).
2. ‘Lazy Sailing’ 16th – 26rth July: from Alta to Alta via North Cape / Honningsvåg. Heading even further north of the Arctic Circle we’ll round north North Cape at 71.11N/25.40E and visit the huge bird sanctuary at Gjessværstappan: Puffins, white tailed sea eagles, cormorants, ocean gannets, kittiwakes, eider ducks… Price: NOK 12,900.- (approx £1485*).
‘Hike & Sail’ are more active holidays with moderate guided hikes ashore. The hike take explore areas where you’ll be more or less all by yourselves. Sometimes the walks will be ‘out and back’ to the boat and others will be traverses, where ‘Goxsheim’ will drop us at one end and meet us at the other. When we stop for breaks we might light a fire, brew coffee and if conditions allow, we’ll test the fishing rod for trout or red char.
3. ‘Hike and Sail’ 28th July – 5th August: from Alta to Tromsø. During these 8 days we’ll explore the beautiful wild coast on foot and by sail. The daily hikes will not be too long or difficult, with maximum 10km per day and up to 800m altitude. If the weather is on our side, one of our planned routes will reach the mountain top at midnight – with a beautiful view to the Arctic Ocean and the Midnight Sun. 8 nights on board. Price: NOK 12,900.- (approx £1485*).
* Where we have given an approximate holiday price in £, this is an indication only. When you book, we will give you an accurate price for that day.
Sailing Yacht ‘Goxsheim’ has a beautiful traditional rig and is supremely cosy below decks, with a wood burning stove and even a sauna! Charles bought ‘Goxsheim’ in 1999 and took her to Arctic Russia to be converted to sail. He met Natasha at the ship yard and, like a true viking, swept her off her feet. The rest, as they say, is history.

These holidays run by our friends Charles and Natasha so we know that you will be well looked after - Charles is an accomplished chef as well as a friendly skipper and meals on board are delicious! Sailing the beautiful classic yacht ‘Goxsheim’ is hard physical work, and great fun. There is plenty of hauling on ropes – but also time to snooze in the bowsprit safety net!
“A fabulous hands-on sailing cruise where few yachts ever go.”
Summer Sail Cruising: If you like the sound of ‘Goxsheim’ - you might also like Sailing and Wildlife in Iceland or Sail and Hike in Spitsbergen.
